SparkyLinux Gets Major Upgrade with Linux 4.6.4 and Budgie 10.2.6 Desktop
A new and highly anticipated update is now available for SparkyLinux, offering the most advanced stable kernel version, Linux 4.6.4.
The arrival of the Linux 4.6.4 kernel package for 64-bit Slackware-based OSes, including Zenwalk, Slax, and SlackEX, was announced by Arne Exton earlier. While many GNU/Linux distributions have yet to update to the latest stable kernel, SparkyLinux users can now do so with ease.
Installation Made Easy
For Arch Linux users, the highly anticipated Linux kernel 4.6.4 is yet to arrive in the main stable repos, but it can be found in the Testing repository. Fortunately, SparkyLinux users can easily update to the latest kernel version by following the simple instructions below.
First Step:
Make sure you are using the “unstable” repository before running the following command for your hardware architecture. If you are unsure how to activate it, please refer to http://sparkylinux.org/wiki/doku.php/repository for instructions.
Next Step:
For 64-bit :
sudo apt-get install linux-image-sparky-amd64
For 32-bit non-PAE:
sudo apt-get install linux-image-sparky-686
For 32-bit PAE:
sudo apt-get install linux-image-sparky-686-pae
Budgie Desktop 10.2.6 Available Now
In addition to the highly anticipated Linux kernel update, SparkyLinux also received a major upgrade in the form of the newly released Budgie Desktop 10.2.6 from the Solus Project. The clever SparkyLinux developers have made it easy for users to install the latest desktop environment using the following set of commands.
Upgrade to Budgie Desktop 10.2.6:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
Install Budgie Desktop 10.2.6:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install budgie-desktop
